If you were stuck on an island and had only one makeup item, what would it be?  One of the popular makeup choices is mascara.  Being stuck on an island is no reason to sacrifice long, luscious lashes.

Most women wear mascara every day.  With it being used around the delicate eye area, it is important to be sure that you’re using a safe, healthy formula.  The run-of-the-mill mascara you find contains petro-chemicals, parabens, formaldehyde releasers, mercury, and phthalates.  These are all toxic ingredients that you do not want flaking into your eyes.

Mercury, in particular, is a neurotoxin that scientific studies have shown to cause damage to the nervous system.  Placing any amount of mercury near my eye is just too close for comfort.  Fortunately, there are cosmetic brands that have mascaras formulated without these harsh ingredients.

I have been on the hunt for a healthy mascara that works just as well as some of the conventional mascaras that I had grown accustomed to.  I recently purchased the Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara and fell in love.

This mascara contains none of the before-mentioned toxic ingredients including sulfates, synthetic frangrance, GMOs, or triclosan .  It also is made with argan oil which is great for conditioning your lashes.

It comes with a huge applicator brush which is perfect for thickening lashes.  I applied two coats without any clumping.  It lasted my entire ten hour day without flaking, smearing, or smudging.  Best of all, I felt good about not having a potentially harmful product on my eyes.

Definitely, check out the Josie Maran GOGO Instant Natural Volume Argan Mascara .  You’ll be stuck on that island looking beautiful and feeling healthy.  For more healthy beauty tips visit Lilikoi Looks on Facebook.

Water is definitely the number one beauty accessory.  Very basic information.  Right?  If you’ve heard about the importance of drinking water once, you’ve heard about it a thousand times.  You may even have your own personal watering hole going by keeping a refillable water bottle stashed in your purse.  Smart indeed.  Nevertheless, the rabbit hole of drinking water goes a bit deeper.

What kind of refillable bottle are drinking your water from?  If your reusable water bottle is made from a clear, hard, polycarbonate plastic; you may need to toss it and replace it with something safer.

Scientific studies have shown the chemical in polycarbonate known as bisphenol A (BPA) to be highly toxic.  When it is transferred into your drinking water from your water bottle it can lead to possible health risks.  These health risks include adverse effects to the human reproductive system and adverse effects on the brain and behaviorClick here to take a closer look at some of the studies on the effects of BPA.

It is now easy to get your hands on a safe water bottle due to the extensive research and wide media coverage on the dangers of BPAClick here to find BPA-free water bottles.  Keep your number one beauty accessory pure and toxin-free.

BUYER BEWARE

In love with a conditioner that leaves your hair silky smooth?  Can’t live without a lotion that
keeps your skin as soft as a baby’s bottom?  Before you declare a beauty match made in heaven, take a look at the list of ingredients.

If you find propylene glycol on the list, you’ve got a case of irreconcilable differencesPropylene glycol and humans should not mix and mingle.

Propylene glycol is an ingredient commonly used as a humectant in many beauty products.  It gives products the silky, moisturizing texture that we love.  The Medical Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) states that propylene glycol is toxic to humans and can cause irritation of skin and eyes.

Only small amounts are used in products which leads people to feel more comfortable with it being in their products.  However, using these small amounts in your shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, etc. can turn into a large amount on a daily basis.

It is important to do your research and be aware of what is going into your personal care products because it ultimately ends up going into your body.

Lilikoi Looks has introduced Ms Toi FBI, who is steady on the case for unsuspecting consumers.  Click Here to see the pilot episode as she takes on propylene glycol.

Shea Butter

After a quick survey of my beauty products, I noticed they had a common denominator: SHEA BUTTER. The products that have stood the test of time in my beauty regimen all contain shea butter.

I took it upon myself to do some research, I now have scientifically documented proof of why I love shea butter.  It is rich in vitamins A, E, F, and essential fatty acids which accounts for its soothing, healing, and moisturizing properties.

In particular, I have been grabbing for an amazing product line that I was recently introduced to.  Golden Liquid Soaps by U.C.A.N. makes homemade, all-natural liquid soaps and moisturizers that contain shea butter as a main ingredient.

Here are some of the benefits I have been noticing from using shea butter in my beauty treatments:

  • Soft Softener and Moisturizer– I have been using shea butter as a night cream for my entire body.  It conditions my skin over night and I wake up to soft, silky skin BONUS: After 3 months of this nightly ritual, I have noticed significant fading in some of my old scarsCLICK HERE for the rich shea butter blend that I recommend.
  • Sandal-Ready Feet – I have been soaking my feet in warm water infused with shea butter liquid soap for 30 minutes once a week.  Rough, dry skin easily wipe away after soaking and leaves me with sandal-ready feet CLICK HERE for the liquid soap that has become my pedicure holy grail.

Spring is in the air and summer is just around the corner. The change in season is definitely welcome.  However, the warmer temperatures and higher levels of humidity make it necessary to change some of the beauty products you are using.  Heavy creams and oily products can be retired and switched out for lighter products.   I recently went shopping with this very purpose.  Here are the must have beauty products that I picked up to better suit me in the spring and summer months.

  • Carol’s Daughter Almond Cookie Shea Soufflé

This is the lightest body cream I’ve ever tried.  It completely absorbs into the skin immediately.  It leaves absolutely no oily residue on the skin surface.  It is free of mineral oil, artificial fragrance, and parabens.  The soft baby powder scent also doesn’t clash with any fragrance I wear.  CLICK HERE to take a closer look.

  • Moom Sugar Based Hair Removal Kit

Sugaring is a natural, gentle alternative to removing unwanted body hair.  These ready-made kits are user-friendly.  It is organic.  The results are long lasting.  CLICK HERE to take a closer look.

  • Waiora Refining Microderm Treatmant

Revive your skin’s natural healthy glow by exfoliating all of the dead cells away that have accumulated over the winter.  This is the gentlest facial exfoliator I have used.  A treatment twice a week keeps pores refined resulting in a porcelain-like complexion.  CLICK HERE to take a closer look.

Here’s something to smile about.  There are simple ways to keep your teeth white and bright NATURALLY.  Using chemical whiteners are harsh and can permanently weaken the enamel of your teeth.  Add these five easy, inexpensive tips to your regimen for a whiter, healthier smile.

  1. It’s a given that you should brush and floss immediately after eating.  If this is not a convenient option, rinse mouth with water to remove any potentially staining residue from your meal.
  2. Use a straw to drink drinks that can stain your teeth such as coffee, tea, and red wine.
  3. Snack on crunchy foods such as carrots and apples.  The extra chewing required for these foods helps remove plaque build up.
  4. Brush teeth with baking soda.  It naturally oxidizes stains on tooth enamel.  It is also very inexpensive.
  5. Be proactive.  Visit the dentist every six months to have your teeth professionally cleaned.
